SPIDER-MAN NOIR SERIES ADDS HARRY POTTER STAR IN MAJOR ROLE

Academy Award-nominated actor Brendan Gleeson is adding another major franchise to his filmography. The Harry Potter alum has officially joined the cast of Sony and Amazon's upcoming superhero series, Spider-Noir.

According to Variety, Gleeson is believed to be playing the main villain, although exact details for his character are being kept under wraps. The actor is perhaps best known for starring in the Harry Potter film series, appearing in three of the eight films as Mad-Eye Moody. His casting in Spider-Noir makes him one of the few actors to appear in both Marvel and DC projects, as the actor is part of the cast for Warner Bros. and DC Studios' Joker: Folie à Deux, which opens in theaters next month.

Kraven the Hunter may be a Sony production, but it has a surprising connection to the film that started it all for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Gleeson is the fifth actor to become attached to Spider-Noir, which is expected to begin production this month in Los Angeles. He joins a cast that includes Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li as a New York nightclub singer, and Abraham Popoola as a World War I veteran. It is unknown if Gleeson's villain originates from the comics or was created specifically for the show.

Spider-Noir Brings the SSU to Television

Spider-Noir will be the first series released under Sony's Spider-Man Universe, a franchise that focuses on supporting characters from the Spider-Man mythos, such as Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter. The upcoming series tells "the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero."

Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher) developed the series and will serve as co-showrunner alongside Oren Uziel (The Lost City), who is the head writer on the project and an executive producer. Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal will also serve as executive producers on Noir.

Insider Daniel Richtman reports that two long-gestating Marvel Cinematic Universe movies may be on the chopping block at Marvel Studios.

Spider-Noir's Episode Count Confirmed

Spider-Noir will consist of eight 45-minute episodes, which Cage considers to be "the equivalent of four movies." The actor shared back in July that he wants to evoke a little bit of Hollywood's Golden Age in his Spider-Man Noir role, which makes sense given that Noir will be set during that era of filmmaking. "We’ll see what happens if I do this Amazon show [Spider-Man Noir], and they put me in black-and-white. We’ll see if we can get some of that flavor," he said, adding that as an actor he always tried to have the kind of "aura" that was present in Golden Age stars like Humphrey Bogart and Hedy Lamarr. Spider-Noir will mark the second time Cage has played Spider-Man Noir. He previously voiced the superhero in the acclaimed animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

Spider-Noir will debut first on MGM+, followed by a global release on Prime Video at a later date.
