ONE GAME REMAINS THE BEST POSSIBLE OPTION FOR A LEGO COLLABORATION

The LEGO company has come a long way from the block-building toys it first brought into pop culture. What was once a toy company founded in Denmark in 1932 has now branched into a media empire. From movie adaptations to TV shows, LEGO is one of the most notable names in entertainment. Beyond movies and TV series, one of LEGO's best ventures has been in the gaming sphere.

Since LEGO began crafting fun video game adaptations of pop culture favorites, like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, the company has shown no signs of stopping. LEGO's next big crossover is with the Horizon franchise with LEGO Horizon Adventures. Although this is an exciting series to add to LEGO's continuously evolving list of collaborations, it still has yet to embrace its perfect crossover opportunity: Minecraft.

Building a Perfect Crossover Game

Granted, LEGO and Minecraft have at least collaborated in one sense. There is a fun variety of Minecraft LEGO sets that are available, but bringing both properties together in one gaming experience has yet to come to fruition. The obvious reason both worlds should collide is that they focus on building. Minecraft still remains the most successful sandbox title in gaming, which has granted it the badge of being the industry's highest-selling game of all time.

LEGO and Minecraft also both boast an impressive media empire that has evolved beyond the origins of these two companies. Not only does the game have its own extensive toy line, but there is even a Minecraft movie on the way. At this point, Minecraft and LEGO are basically two sides of the same coin. An emphasis on building and lighthearted humor would likely bring about one of the most successful crossovers in modern gaming.

The first LEGO game was LEGO: Fun to Build for the Sega Pico.

Since LEGO and Minecraft have already collaborated in the past with its many LEGO sets, it makes one wonder why both franchises haven't taken the leap towards a video game crossover. It almost seems like this collaboration is automatically set to be a massive success that only benefits both parties. There is the argument that the building emphasis of LEGO and Minecraft would keep a crossover from feeling unique enough to work. This is a solid point, but there are also enough differences between both franchises that it feels more likely to succeed than fail. Fortnite's hugely popular LEGO Fortnite mode is basically a preview of what this type of crossover could be like.

A LEGO and Minecraft Game May Be Wishful Thinking

Despite the crossover being perfect, a LEGO and Minecraft game may be a pipe dream. If the game hasn't happened at this point, then it may never come to be. One of the biggest draws of LEGO games is that they put a fresh spin on long-running franchises, so the argument that both properties are too similar may ultimately hold a lot of weight. Take the Horizon games, for example. This is an action-adventure series known for a more serious tone, and its LEGO counterpart promises a stark contrast. The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Batman, and many other franchises that have been given the LEGO makeover provide a more fun-loving perspective than the source material.

Minecraft is already a lighthearted world, so it wouldn't exactly benefit from the LEGO perspective. Although both franchises seem like they would be the best possible crossover imaginable, a playable collaboration might not offer enough newness. As the LEGO games continue to explore exciting series, a Minecraft version may be best left to building block sets.
